I was once asked why I write, and the answer I came up with is that I write because I hope to read. So many of my peers intend to write with a great purpose in mind. They want to have the perfect underlying theme and write with the quality that may someday enter the canon of classic literature. It may be surprising but I’ve never felt that way. I love the great literature of the canon, but more often than not these aren’t the books that affect me. My goal has always been to elicit genuine emotions. Books that literally make you laugh, make you drop the book in surprise, make you chuck the book in anger, or make you shed tears or even sob into your carpet—these are the books that matter to me. I have had all of these experiences with books and I cherish each moment. In my mind, God has given us the gift us literature so that we may experience every facet of human emotion even amongst the monotony of everyday life. I write because I hope to give these emotions to others.
